Yamaha
Japanese musical instrument manufacturer, founded as Nippon Gakki in 1887, that brought FM synthesis to market with the DX7.
Founded by Torakusu Yamaha as Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. in Hamamatsu, Japan, in 1887, initially building reed organs; the company took the Yamaha Corporation name in 1987, its centennial. Stanford University licensed John Chowning’s newly discovered FM synthesis algorithm to Yamaha starting in 1973, and Yamaha built that license into its digital synthesis engine — most famously the DX7 and its flagship counterpart, the DX1.
