Yamaha DX1
Yamaha's 1984 FM flagship above the DX7 — a doubled six-operator engine in a handmade rosewood cabinet with polyphonic aftertouch.
Released in 1984 at roughly $10,000–13,900, the DX1 was Yamaha’s FM flagship: the same six-operator FM synthesis engine as the DX7, doubled to two complete six-operator generators per note, housed in a handmade Brazilian rosewood cabinet with a 73-key wooden keyboard offering polyphonic aftertouch, solid backlit buttons in place of the DX7’s membrane panel, and dual LCD displays for direct parameter access. Built in far smaller numbers than the mass-market DX7, it stood as Yamaha’s professional counterpart rather than its replacement.
