World Soundscape Project
R. Murray Schafer's research group at Simon Fraser University that founded acoustic ecology.
Founded by R. Murray Schafer at Simon Fraser University in the late 1960s, the World Soundscape Project (WSP) treated the acoustic environment itself as an object of study and composition, producing surveys such as The Vancouver Soundscape (1973) and the Handbook for Acoustic Ecology (1978). Its core researchers — Schafer, Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp, Howard Broomfield, Peter Huse, and Bruce Davis — went on to found the field of acoustic ecology.
