Warren Burt
American-born, Australia-based composer, a pioneer of microtonality and lo-fi live electronics across five decades.
Warren Burt (b. 1949, grew up in northern New York State) studied at the State University of New York at Albany with Joel Chadabe, then took an MA at UC San Diego (1971–75) under Robert Erickson and Kenneth Gaburo, before a 1975 move to Melbourne, where he has mostly been based since; he completed a PhD at the University of Wollongong in 2007. Across acoustic and electroacoustic composition, sound installation, text-based work, and video, he has worked microtonality, improvisation, humor, live interaction, and deliberately lo-fi electronics into a body of work spanning nearly five decades. Now based in Ararat, Victoria, he continues composing, helps develop the Wilsonic microtonal composition program based on Erv Wilson’s theories, and releases his own work through his Scarlet Aardvark Records.
