Violent Onsen Geisha
Masaya Nakahara's Tokyo noise project, active from 1988 alongside his work as a writer and, later, actor.
Masaya Nakahara (b. 1970, Tokyo) has recorded as Violent Onsen Geisha since 1988, releasing through Boid and Daisyworld — Excrete Music (1991), Otis (1993), Que Sera, Sera (1995), The Midnight Gambler (1996) — before largely moving to a second alias, Hair Stylistics, from the late 1990s on. Outside music Nakahara is a prolific novelist and film critic, and co-starred in Shinji Aoyama’s 2005 film My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me? alongside Tadanobu Asano. His remix and collaborative credits sit closer to Japan’s indie and experimental-pop circles than the Osaka noise scene — including the 1997 session Reprovisers alongside Jim O’Rourke and Microstoria, plus work with Cornelius — and no documented collaboration or release ties him to Merzbow, C.C.C.C., or the other Japanoise artists in this catalog.
