Variety
In cybernetics, the number of distinguishable states a system can take on — and, per Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety, the true measure of a regulator's power to control.
In cybernetics, the number of distinguishable states a system or its environment can take on. W. Ross Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety, introduced in An Introduction to Cybernetics (1956), holds that only variety can destroy variety — a regulator can reduce the variety (the disorder or uncertainty) of the system it controls only to the extent that the regulator itself possesses at least as much variety in its own possible responses. The law sets a hard lower bound on how simple a controller can be and still govern a given system.
