University of Helsinki Electronic Music Studio

Proposed to musicology professor Erik Tawaststjerna by students in 1962 and built out technically by Erkki Kurenniemi, the University of Helsinki’s electronic music studio began modestly — tape recorders, oscillators, and a spring reverb in the corner of a department office — before Kurenniemi built ten original instruments and some thirty electroacoustic works there through 1975. It remains the oldest continuously operating electronic music studio in the Nordic countries.
