Thomas Ankersmit

Dutch sound artist working primarily on the Serge modular synthesizer, exploring psychoacoustic phenomena through deliberate misuse of equipment.

Born 1979 in Leiden, Thomas Ankersmit has worked primarily on the Serge modular synthesizer since 1998, first through live performance and installation work and, from 2010, on releases for PAN, Touch, and Ash International. His work explores physical and psychoacoustic phenomena — sound reflections, infrasonic vibration, otoacoustic emission — often through deliberate misuse of his equipment, pushing feedback and signal disruption into the compositional material itself. He recorded Weerzin/Oscillators and Guitars (2005) with Jim O’Rourke, and has also collaborated with Phill Niblock, Valerio Tricoli, and Kevin Drumm.
