The New Blockaders
British noise duo, founded early 1980s, whose Changez les Blockeurs is widely cited as the first true noise record of the modern era.
Formed in the early 1980s by brothers Richard and Philip Rupenus, The New Blockaders (TNB) reject the term “music” for their work, framing it instead as “anti-music” — a stance of deliberate sonic nihilism opposed to conventional notions of music, art, and even anti-art. Their debut, Changez les Blockeurs (1982), built from junk-metal noise, scrapes, and disorienting found sound, is widely cited (Ron Lessard of RRRecords called it “the first true noise record of the modern era”) as a foundational document of noise music, directly influencing Merzbow, Hijokaidan, and Incapacitants among the emerging Japanese noise scene, as well as Nurse With Wound, Coil, and Sonic Youth. TNB also collaborated directly with Organum’s David Jackman on Pulp (1984).
