Tangerine Dream

Founded by Edgar Froese in West Berlin in 1967, Tangerine Dream’s early “Pink Years” lineup included Conrad Schnitzler on cello, violin, and effects from 1969 to 1970, contributing to the group’s debut Electronic Meditation (1970) before leaving to found Kluster with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Tangerine Dream continued through further electroacoustic albums — Alpha Centauri (1971), Zeit (1972), Atem (1973) — before the mid-1970s trio of Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann established the sequencer-driven “Berlin School” sound on Phaedra (1974), a UK top-20 hit for Virgin Records. The group became prolific film composers from the late 1970s onward and continued recording and touring after Froese’s death in 2015 under bandleader Thorsten Quaeschning.
