Founded in June 1955 by Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna, with its technical apparatus designed by physicist Alfredo Lietti, RAI’s Studio di Fonologia Musicale in Milan was Europe’s third major electronic music studio after Cologne’s WDR studio and the GRM in Paris. Composers who worked there included Luigi Nono, John Cage, and Henri Pousseur, before the studio closed in 1983.
