Sound Transform Systems (STS)

Successor company to Serge Modular Music Systems, founded 1993 by Rex Probe under license from Serge Tcherepnin.

When Serge Tcherepnin exited synthesizer manufacturing in 1993, he licensed the Serge name and existing module designs to Rex Probe — one of the CalArts students who had worked with him on the system since 1972 — who continued the business as Sound Transform Systems (STS). Chief engineer Kevin Fortune, who had been prototyping Serge circuits directly for Tcherepnin since the mid-1970s, moved to the Bay Area that year to work alongside Probe; STS moved away from kits and user-selectable panel arrangements toward pre-configured shop panels and, later, half-sized M-Class panels.
