Founded in Amsterdam on 27 February 1969 by composers including Misha Mengelberg, Louis Andriessen, Peter Schat, Dick Raaymakers, Jan van Vlijmen, Reinbert de Leeuw, and Konrad Boehmer, STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) built its identity around hands-on instrument-building for live electronic performance rather than fixed-tape composition — a direction sharpened under Michel Waisvisz, who directed the studio from 1981 to 2008.
