Station '70: Call in Question / Live Independence
Previously unreleased 1970 recordings by Masayuki Takayanagi's New Direction trio, first issued in 2022.
Recorded live in February–March 1970 at Tokyo’s Station ‘70 and left unreleased for decades, this material first appeared piecemeal on two P.S.F. Japan CDs, Call in Question (1994) and Live Independence (1995), before Black Editions gathered it as a deluxe 3LP box in 2022. It documents Masayuki Takayanagi’s New Direction trio — formed the previous August with bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa and drummer Sabu Toyozumi (Yoshisaburo Toyozumi), joined on one piece by saxophonist Mototeru Takagi — in an early, still-forming stage of the intensely physical, non-responsive playing that would define Takayanagi’s later work.
