SND

Formed in Sheffield in 1998 by computer programmers Mark Fell and Mat Steel, SND built tracks from variations on algorithmic, pattern-generating systems — non-repetitive structures equally indebted to late-80s/early-90s house and techno as to computer music. Three albums for Mille Plateaux, alongside a continuing series on their own label, put SND at the forefront of digital minimalism, influencing without quite belonging to the “clicks and cuts” movement it’s often grouped with.
