Silver Apples of the Moon
Morton Subotnick's 1967 LP, the first electronic work commissioned by a record label, made on the Buchla 100.
Commissioned by Nonesuch Records in 1967 — the first electronic work commissioned by a record label — Morton Subotnick composed Silver Apples of the Moon over a thirteen-month deadline in his Bleecker Street studio in New York, working on the Buchla 100 series synthesizer Don Buchla had built in close collaboration with him. Titled after a line from Yeats’s “The Song of Wandering Aengus,” it became an unexpected commercial success and one of the defining works of the modular synthesizer’s early years.
