Released in 1989 on Vanilla Records, Shock! Shock! Shock! finds Violent Onsen Geisha’s Masaya Nakahara combining techno, pop samples, and hip hop with unconventional sources — his sister’s karaoke singing, recordings of his parents arguing, broken glass and ceramic — into noise that resists genre entirely: “For someone who has no musical talent like me,” Nakahara has said, “the only thing that I could naturally create was noise.” Urashima’s 2021 vinyl reissue was mastered by Andrea Marutti, limited to 299 copies.
