A 1963 live set of Thelonious Monk repertoire by Steve Lacy's quartet, released for the first time in 1975.
Recorded live, probably in March 1963, at the Phase Two Coffee House in New York, School Days documents Steve Lacy’s quartet with Roswell Rudd, Henry Grimes, and Denis Charles working through Thelonious Monk repertoire (“Bye-Ya,” “Brilliant Corners,” “Monk’s Dream,” “Monk’s Mood,” “Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lues-are,” “Skippy,” “Pannonica”) years before Lacy’s own Monk-focused recordings became widely known — this quartet was among the first groups anywhere built entirely around Monk’s compositions. Released for the first time in 1975 on Emanem.
