Sachiko M

Japanese musician who plays only a sampler's internal test tones, a central figure of Tokyo's onkyo scene.

Sachiko Matsubara, performing as Sachiko M, has worked as a sampler player since 1994, moving from the cut-up and plunderphonic sampling approaches of her early career to a radically reduced method she originated in 1998: playing only a sampler’s own internal test tones rather than any recorded material. Her 2000 solo release Sine Wave Solo, built entirely from these tones, drew international attention to the technique and to Tokyo’s onkyo scene of minimalist, silence-based improvisation, of which she was a central figure alongside Otomo Yoshihide — with whom she played in Ground Zero — and Toshimaru Nakamura.
