Riverrun

Titled after the opening word of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, Riverrun was built entirely from real-time granular synthesis on a DMX-1000 digital signal processor, at densities up to 2,375 grains per second — the first piece to explore the range between synchronic and asynchronic granular textures, and a landmark in Barry Truax’s development of the technique. It won the Magisterium prize at the 1991 Bourges International Competition of Electroacoustic Music.
