Delivered as the 1973 CBC Massey Lectures and published the following year, Designing Freedom is Stafford Beer’s most accessible statement of management cybernetics: institutions fail, he argues, not through bad intentions but through bad organization — and cybernetics, “the science of effective organization,” gives us the tools to diagnose and redesign them. Beer treats viability, regulation, and control as design problems, at the scale of social systems rather than circuits, and insists that the same principles run through both.
