Rashied Ali

American drummer; a progenitor of free jazz drumming, John Coltrane's late-period drummer.

Rashied Ali (1935–2009) became John Coltrane’s sole drummer in 1966 after McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones left the group, playing on Coltrane’s final recordings including the free duets of Interstellar Space (1967). In 1972 he recorded Duo Exchange with tenor saxophonist Frank Lowe, released the following year as the inaugural album on Ali and Lowe’s own Survival Records.
