PPG Waveterm
Wolfgang Palm's 1982 companion computer for the PPG Wave series, for waveform drawing, sampling, and digital editing.
Designed by Wolfgang Palm and manufactured through 1985, the Waveterm was a rack-mounted companion computer for PPG’s Wave synthesizers — a proprietary Flex9-based system with a built-in monitor and dual 8-inch (later 5.25-inch) floppy drives, letting a user draw waveforms directly as points on a graph, sample acoustic sounds, and load and edit sound data on disk rather than through the synthesizer’s own limited front panel. The later Waveterm B moved to a Motorola 68000-based motherboard.
