Pepsi Pavilion Sound Modifier Console

The playable control surface on the Pepsi Pavilion floor, letting an operator route, modulate, and spatially distribute sound live across the dome's 37 speakers.

Positioned on the Pepsi Pavilion floor, the Sound Modifier Console was the operator-facing control surface for the Pepsi Pavilion Sound System: from it, an operator could route any of the system’s up to 32 live or recorded inputs through AM or FM modulation and filtering (or pass them through unmodified), then distribute the result across the dome’s 37 speakers in real time, in patterns that could equally be pre-programmed. Pauline Oliveros and Lowell Cross were among those who operated the console during the Pavilion’s run, alongside David Tudor himself.
