Formed in London in 1978 by Steven Stapleton, John Fothergill, and Heman Pathak — three record collectors who bought instruments on impulse after Stapleton talked his way into a recording session — Nurse With Wound’s original trio made two albums, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979) and To the Quiet Men from a Tiny Girl (1980), now regarded as foundational to industrial music. Chance Meeting’s liner notes included the extensive “Nurse With Wound List” of obscure experimental artists, itself hugely influential as a discovery document. By 1981 Fothergill and Pathak had both left, leaving Stapleton as Nurse With Wound’s sole continuing member across a vast, restlessly eclectic discography.
