Completed in 1954 and opened in 1955 at Japanese broadcaster NHK in Tokyo, modeled directly on the Cologne WDR studio, the NHK Electronic Music Studio was founded through the efforts of composers Toshiro Mayuzumi and Makoto Moroi, whose 1956 collaboration Shichi no Variation is considered its early landmark work. Composers who worked there through the 1950s and 60s included Minao Shibata, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Toru Takemitsu, and Joji Yuasa.
