Library Person
Misha Mengelberg
Dutch pianist and composer; co-founder of the Instant Composers Pool and STEIM.
Misha Mengelberg (1935–2017) graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1964, shaped early on by hearing John Cage lecture at Darmstadt and by his involvement with Fluxus. In 1967 he co-founded the Instant Composers Pool with drummer Han Bennink and Willem Breuker, a foundational group in Dutch improvised music, and the following decades saw him become one of STEIM’s founding composers, mixing composition and improvisation in a style often compared to Thelonious Monk’s.
