Miller Puckette (b. 1959) worked at the MIT Media Lab before moving to IRCAM in Paris, where he developed Max, a visual programming language for music and multimedia, in the late 1980s; dissatisfied with aspects of Max/MSP and IRCAM’s marketing of it, he began Pure Data around 1996 as an open-source successor, and is now professor emeritus at UC San Diego.
