Musical Instrument Digital Interface, the 1983 protocol for communication between electronic instruments.
Ratified in 1983 by a consortium of manufacturers including Roland and Sequential Circuits, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) standardized how electronic instruments exchange note, control, and timing data, replacing the earlier patchwork of incompatible analog control voltage conventions with a single specification any manufacturer could implement.
