Michael Stearns
American ambient/space-music composer and film sound designer, a founding figure of the Californian space music scene.
Michael Stearns (b. 1948) is an American composer working in electronic and ambient music since the early 1970s, alongside Steve Roach and Robert Rich a founding figure of the Californian space-music scene. Beyond his solo albums he built The Beam, a twelve-foot aluminum shaft strung with piano wire for generating deep low frequencies, and became a prolific film and large-format sound designer, scoring Ron Fricke’s Baraka among many others.
