Michael Hoenig
German electronic musician, member of Agitation Free and briefly Tangerine Dream, later a Hollywood film and television composer.
Michael Hoenig (b. 1952, Hamburg) joined the Berlin electronic group Agitation Free in 1971, contributing synthesizer treatments through albums including Malesch (1972) before, in 1975, briefly replacing Peter Baumann in Tangerine Dream for an Australian tour and a BBC-recorded Royal Albert Hall concert. His sole 1970s solo album, Departure From the Northern Wasteland (1978), drew directly on that Tangerine Dream lineage — built from sequenced analog synthesizer patterns close in spirit to the Froese-Baumann-Franke Berlin School sound, with guitar contributed by former Agitation Free bandmates Lutz Ulbrich and Michael “Micki” Duwe. Hoenig relocated to Los Angeles shortly after its release and became a prolific film and television composer through his company Metamusic Productions, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination for the 1997 series Dark Skies and later scoring the Baldur’s Gate video games.
