Merrill Ellis
American composer; founded the electronic music program at the University of North Texas in 1962.
Merrill Ellis (1916–1981) taught band, orchestra, theory, and composition in Texas and Missouri schools before joining the University of North Texas College of Music, where in 1962 he established an electronic music program that became the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia. He worked with Robert Moog to develop a portable version of the Moog synthesizer for himself and his doctoral students to use in live multimedia performances during the mid-to-late 1960s. When the North Texas music complex expanded in the late 1970s, a new performance theater was named the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater in his honor.
