Marcus Schmickler
German composer and producer working across electronic music, sound installation, and electroacoustic improvisation.
Marcus Schmickler (b. 1968) studied musicology at Cologne University before completing studies in electronic music and composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in 1999, writing his thesis on Gottfried Michael Koenig. Based in Cologne, he works across multichannel sound installation, electroacoustic improvisation, radio plays, and theater, often drawing on algorithmic systems and microtonal tuning. He joined the ensemble MIMEO in 1998 alongside Christian Fennesz, Rafael Toral, and Kaffe Matthews, and is also known for the post-rock project Pluramon. His long-running duo with Thomas Lehn, begun on Bart (2000), later expanded into a trio with Keith Rowe on Rabbit Run (2003).
