Maggi Payne

American composer, flutist, and sound engineer; co-director of the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music, 1992–2018.

Maggi Payne (b. 1945) earned an MFA in electronic music at Mills College under Robert Ashley’s mentorship, having studied earlier with Gordon Mumma at the University of Illinois. She joined the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music in 1972 and co-directed it from 1992 to 2018, teaching recording engineering, composition, and electronic music while working across tape, synthesis, and video in her own compositions.
