Louis Andriessen
Dutch composer; co-founder of STEIM, leading figure of The Hague school.
Louis Andriessen (1939–2021) studied with his father and Kees van Baaren at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague before two years under Luciano Berio in Milan and Berlin. Widely regarded as the leading Dutch composer of his generation, he co-founded STEIM in 1969 and helped found the ensembles Orkest de Volharding and Hoketus, developing a distinctive style built from elemental harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic materials.
