Korg's 1990 digital synth built around Wave Sequencing — stepping and crossfading through a sequence of waveforms to create continuously evolving timbres.
Released in 1990, the Wavestation is a digital synthesizer built around Wave Sequencing: a sequence of up to 255 PCM waveform steps, each with its own duration, pitch, level, and crossfade time, played back to produce continuously morphing, evolving timbres — a marked step beyond the four-slot vector synthesis of its spiritual predecessor, the Sequential Prophet VS. It was designed by a team of former Sequential Circuits engineers, including Dave Smith, who joined Korg’s R&D group after Sequential’s 1987 closure and carried the Prophet VS’s ideas forward into a new instrument.
