Karlheinz Stockhausen
German composer, director of the WDR electronic music studio from 1963, a central figure of postwar serialism and electronic music.
Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928–2007) was a German composer central to postwar serialism and one of electronic music’s defining figures, associated with the WDR Studio für elektronische Musik in Cologne from its early years and its director from 1963. His 1970 Donaueschingen Music Days commission was part of what led to the founding of the SWR Experimentalstudio the following year. He taught internationally, including Jon Hassell.
