Jim O'Rourke

Jim O’Rourke (b. 1969, Chicago) emerged from that city’s experimental and improvised music scene in the late 1980s, an early member of Daniel Burke’s Illusion of Safety and co-composer of its 1992 album Probe, working across labels including Sound of Pig, Staalplaat, and Skin Graft before forming a long duo with David Grubbs as Gastr del Sol (1993–1998). He joined Sonic Youth as an official member from 1999 to 2005, and from 1997 was a member of the improvised computer-music trio Fenn O’Berg alongside Fennesz and Peter Rehberg. His solo catalog splits between song-oriented Drag City albums — Bad Timing (1997), Eureka (1999), Insignificance (2001) — and an ongoing Bandcamp archival series, Steamroom, built largely around a Serge modular synthesizer. As a producer he mixed Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and produced their Grammy-winning A Ghost Is Born, produced John Fahey’s 1997 album Womblife during Fahey’s late-career turn toward the avant-garde, and produced and mixed Faust’s 1994 reunion album Rien. Since 2017 he has restored and mastered Roland Kayn’s cybernetic-music catalog for its ongoing posthumous release, and has recorded duo albums with Kassel Jaeger (Wakes on Cerulean, 2017; In Cobalt Aura Sleeps, 2020) and PBK (Unidentified Again, 2015). Tony Conrad contributed to Gastr del Sol’s Upgrade & Afterlife (1996), and O’Rourke has also recorded with Voice Crack and Günter Müller (Table Chair and Hatstand, 1997), John Duncan (Yeah, 2014), and Derek Bailey, appearing on his 1998 album Playbacks. Further credited collaborations include Eddie Prévost and Michael Prime (Alpha Lemur Echo Two, 2001), multiple mixing and remix credits for Organum (1990–2004), a contribution to Nurse With Wound’s Angry Eelectric Finger (2004), a run of collaborations with Merzbow spanning a 1997 Scumtron remix to 2015’s Flying Basket, the 1997 Microstoria session Reprovisers (with Violent Onsen Geisha), and the 2000 tribute album Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi. O’Rourke relocated to Japan around 2000, where he continues to score films and record with Eiko Ishibashi.
