Founded in 1963 as a joint venture between Belgian broadcaster BRT and Ghent University, IPEM (Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music) paired audio engineering with music production under first director Louis De Meester, with engineer Hubert Vuylsteke building its early sound-generating equipment — some 470 compositions were realized there between 1963 and 1987.
