Ikutaro Kakehashi

Japanese engineer, founder of Roland Corporation, co-developer of the MIDI specification.

Ikutaro Kakehashi (1930–2017) founded Roland Corporation in Osaka in 1972 after an earlier venture, Ace Tone, building the TR-808, TB-303, and Jupiter-8 among Roland’s early instruments. Working with Dave Smith of Sequential Circuits, he was a driving force behind the MIDI specification, ratified in 1983 as a shared standard across manufacturers.
