I of IV

Recorded in real time in July 1966 at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio — keying its bank of twelve oscillators independently, holding some down with fishing weights — Pauline Oliveros’s I of IV builds hypnotic, droning tape-loop textures from a partially improvised session. First released by CBS alongside Steve Reich’s Come Out and Richard Maxfield’s Night Music, it was the first of a planned four-part series that eventually grew to five pieces.
