Human Music

Jon Appleton and Don Cherry's 1970 electronic-jazz collaboration, recorded at Dartmouth's Bregman studio.

Recorded over two weeks in February 1970 at Dartmouth’s Bregman Electronic Music Studio and released the same year on Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label, Human Music set Don Cherry’s trumpet and voice against Jon Appleton’s electronic synthesis across four tracks — “BOA,” “OBA,” “ABO,” and “BAO” — an early crossing of electronic composition, jazz, and Cherry’s ethnological interests. It won a Swing Journal award in 1971.
