Founded in Rome in 1964 by composer Franco Evangelisti, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza was among the first experimental-composer collectives, drawing on jazz, serialism, and musique concrète toward collective, noise-embracing improvisation. Its personnel through the 1960s and 70s included Ennio Morricone, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini, Walter Branchi, Giovanni Piazza, Jesús Villa Rojo, Frederic Rzewski, John Heineman, and Roland Kayn. The group dissolved in 1980.
