Developed by Max Mathews at Bell Labs in 1970, GROOVE (Generated Real-time Output Operations on Voltage-controlled Equipment) let a composer sketch and refine a control function on a computer in real time, then play it back to drive an analog synthesizer — pioneering real-time computer control of sound generation ahead of most subsequent computer music systems.
