Gilbert Rouget
French ethnomusicologist; longtime head of the Musée de l'Homme's ethnomusicology department and author of Music and Trance.
Gilbert Rouget (1916–2017) led the ethnomusicology department at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, where in 1947 he built the museum’s audio recording studio and launched the record series that became the Collection CNRS–Musée de l’Homme, becoming research director at the CNRS in 1973 and later founding a doctoral program in ethnomusicology at Paris X Nanterre. His fieldwork concentrated on West African musical traditions, particularly Yoruba and Beninese vodun practice, which grounded his 1980 doctoral thesis Music and Trance, a comparative theory of how music relates to possession states across cultures.
