Feedback

A system's output routed back as its own input, forming a causal loop — the organizing mechanism of self-regulation in cybernetics.

A loop in which a system’s own output is measured and returned as input, altering its subsequent behavior. Negative feedback drives a system toward a stable target — the operating principle of a governor, a thermostat, or a servo — while positive feedback amplifies a deviation rather than correcting it. Norbert Wiener made feedback the organizing concept of cybernetics itself in 1948, naming the field from the Greek kybernetes (“steersman,” or “governor”).
