Tony Conrad
American violinist, filmmaker, and composer, a member of the Theatre of Eternal Music from 1964 to 1966.
Tony Conrad (1940–2016) was an American violinist, filmmaker, and composer who joined La Monte Young’s Theatre of Eternal Music from 1964 to 1966, playing sustained just-intonation drones on amplified violin. In 1966 he made The Flicker, a landmark of structural cinema built entirely from alternating black and white frames, and he carried his drone practice forward into his own music, most notably the 1973 collaboration with Faust, Outside the Dream Syndicate.
