
Tom Oberheim (b. 1936) founded Oberheim Electronics in Santa Monica in 1969, building effects pedals and digital sequencers before the 1974 Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM) — designed with Dave Rossum — became the company’s first synthesizer voice and the basis for its later polyphonic instruments.
