Throbbing Gristle
British industrial group pioneering industrial music and culture.
Formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1975 by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter Christopherson, and Chris Carter, Throbbing Gristle grew directly out of P-Orridge and Fanni Tutti’s performance-art collective COUM Transmissions — the group’s public debut coincided with COUM’s final show, the October 1976 exhibition Prostitution at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. Pioneering industrial music and founding Industrial Records to release it, the group recorded The Second Annual Report (1977), D.o.A. (1978), and 20 Jazz Funk Greats (1979) before splitting in 1981; they reformed in 2004, recording three further albums before Christopherson’s death in 2010 ended the group permanently.
