Steve Roden (1964-2023) was an American visual artist and musician who coined the term “lowercase” for a practice of quiet, closely-mic’d, often object- and field-recording-based sound, working at the intersection of visual art and experimental music. His 2001 album Forms of Paper, released on Richard Chartier’s Line label, is credited as the first lowercase record; the two later collaborated directly, with Bernhard Günter, on (For Morton Feldman) (2002).
